What functional rehabilitation is
Functional means the exercises are built around the things you actually do: lifting children, running, gardening, sitting at a desk or getting back on the footy field. Your program builds four things:
- Strength: progressive exercises that load muscles and tendons safely
- Control and balance: how well you move, not just how strong you are
- Mobility: moving freely through the range you need
- Confidence: graded steps back to the activities you have been avoiding
Who it can help
We build rehabilitation programs for:
- Active adults returning to sport after a strain or sprain
- People with back or neck pain that keeps coming back
- Shoulder and hip pain that limits training, work or sleep
- Desk workers who want to feel stronger and move more easily (see desk and posture strain)
- Older adults who want to stay strong, steady and independent (see stiffness and mobility with age)
- Parents returning to exercise after pregnancy, at a pace that suits them
What a session involves
Every plan follows the same five steps, adapted to you.
Assess
We hear what you want to get back to, then test how you move, your strength, balance and control, and screen thoroughly so nothing is missed.
Explain
What we found, what is holding you back, what we suggest, how long it should take and what it costs. Then you decide.
Build
We teach each exercise in clinic until it feels right, then give you a clear program to follow at home or at your gym.
Progress
As you get stronger, we increase the challenge step by step, with clear milestones for returning to sport or heavier work.
Review
We retest your strength, movement and goals at set points, so you can see your progress, and space out visits as you improve.
How it fits with your other care
For active adults, we are your team from first assessment to return to sport. Rehabilitation often sits alongside:
- Hands-on care
Adjustments and soft tissue work to ease pain and stiffness while you rebuild strength.
ABC Technique- Pregnancy care
Gentle, adapted exercise through pregnancy and a steady return afterwards.
Pregnancy care- Care for active adults
Performance assessments and return-to-sport plans with clear milestones.
Care for active adults
If your assessment shows further investigation is needed, we work alongside your GP.
Questions about functional rehabilitation
What is functional rehabilitation?
It is exercise-based care that rebuilds strength, control and movement for the things you do every day, from lifting and walking to training and sport. Your program is built from a movement assessment and progressed as you improve.
Do I need a gym for functional rehabilitation?
No. Most programs use your body weight and simple equipment such as resistance bands, so you can do them at home. If you train at a gym, we build your program around it.
How often do I need to do the exercises?
Usually a few times a week, with some exercises daily. Your program is built to fit your routine, and we adjust it if it is not working for you.
Is functional rehabilitation only for athletes?
No. We use it for everyone from weekend athletes to desk workers and older adults. The goal is always the activities that matter to you.
Can rehabilitation be combined with chiropractic adjustments?
Yes. Most plans combine hands-on care with exercise, which is how guidelines recommend caring for back and neck pain.
Do I need a referral for functional rehabilitation?
No. You can book directly online or by phone.
Can I claim functional rehabilitation on my health fund?
Yes, if your extras cover includes chiropractic. We accept private health insurance.
